To fight and raise awareness for arthritis, the nation’s leading cause of disability, the Arthritis Foundation is holding their 2015 Walk to Cure Arthritis at Montrose Beach. The walk does not only set an example for raising awareness, but for exercising to help manage arthritis. The CDC recommends two hours and 30 minutes of moderate-intensity aerobic activity per week; this can include brisk walking, cycling, swimming, gardening, or dancing. Another option is an hour and 15 minute vigorous-intensity aerobic activity per week; this can include calisthenics, weight training, or working with resistance bands.

 A link may be present between the kind of socks one wears and the development of blisters on the feet. Wearing thin or cotton socks can increase the friction that causes the outer layer of skin to separate from the inner layers of skin.

Thin and cotton socks absorb sweat and therefore leave no lubrication for the feet. Preventing blisters lies in making sure the feet absorb the friction created.

This can be done by rubbing an antiperspirant or petroleum jelly over the areas of the feet that rub against the shoe, wearing friction-reducing socks, and reducing moisture by putting talcum powder or cornstarch in your shoes or socks.

In addition to sock type, long hours on your feet, either standing or walking, can elevate your risk for developing blisters. Foot Blisters

Foot blisters develop as a result of constantly wearing tight or ill-fitting footwear. This happens due to the constant rubbing from the shoe, which can often lead to pain.

What are Foot Blisters?

A foot blister is a small fluid-filled pocket that forms on the upper-most layer of the skin. Blisters are filled with clear fluid and can lead to blood drainage or pus if the area becomes infected.

How do Blisters Form?

Blisters on the feet are often the result of constant friction of skin and material, usually by shoe rubbing. Walking in sandals, boots, or shoes that don’t fit properly for long periods of time can result in a blister. Having consistent foot moisture and humidity can easily lead to blister formation.

Prevention & Treatment

It is important to properly care for the affected area in order to prevent infection and ease the pain. Do not lance the blister and use a band-aid to provide pain relief. Also, be sure to keep your feet dry and wear proper fitting shoes. If you see blood or pus in a blister, seek a doctor.

Hyperhidrosis of the feet is a clinical condition in which the feet sweat excessively. Young men are particularly susceptible to the condition. To combat sweaty feet, there are several solutions.

Wear moisture-wicking socks made out of synthetic material and change them at least once-a-day to prevent bacteria from growing in the damp environment. Foot powder, cornstarch, or even an antiperspirant or deodorant on the feet can also help control sweaty feet.

Hyperhidrosis of the Feet

Hyperhidrosis is a rare disorder that can cause people to have excessive sweating of their feet. This can usually occur all on its own without rigorous activity involved. People who suffer from hyperhidrosis may also experience sweaty palms.

Although it is said that sweating is a healthy process meant to cool down the body temperature and to maintain a proper internal temperature, hyperhidrosis may prove to be a huge hindrance on a person’s everyday life.

Plantar hyperhidrosis is considered to be the main form of hyperhidrosis. Secondary hyperhidrosis can refer to sweating that occurs in areas other than the feet or hands and armpits. Often this may be a sign of it being related to another medical condition such as menopause, hyperthyroidism and even Parkinson’s disease.

In order to alleviate this condition, it is important to see your doctor so that they may prescribe the necessary medications so that you can begin to live a normal life again. If this is left untreated, it is said that it will persist throughout an individual’s life.

In lieu of National Foot Health Awareness month, the National Diabetes Education Program has posted some suggestions to help protect the feet from infection and prevent serious foot problems.

Simply checking the feet every day and taking care to check between the toes and at the bottom of the foot can help reveal small cuts or blisters that may be developing. The feet should also be kept dry, particularly between the toes.

Wash the feet every day, as this promotes good health and also provides for a great time to check the feet. The feet should be kept soft and moisturized with lotion or cream to prevent cracked heels. All of these measures can pave the way for optimal daily foot care.

Every Day Foot Care

Often, people take care of their bodies, face and hair more so than they do for their feet. But the feet are a very important aspect of our bodies, and one that we should pay more attention to. After rupturing his left Achilles tendon on March 5th and undergoing surgical repair on March 11th, Portland Trail Blazers guard Wesley Matthews spent a few weeks resting in preparation for recovery.

Now, Matthews has moved into strengthening and has recently gone through his first post-surgery workout. While strengthening often begins within eight weeks of surgery for most people, Matthews—who is of great health and athleticism—began making moves within three weeks. The athlete is projected to return by December if he remains dedicated to rehabilitation.

What is the Achilles Tendon?

The Achilles tendon is a tendon that connects the lower leg muscles and calf to the heel of the foot. It is the strongest tendon in the human body and is essential for making movement possible. Any tendon injuries, however, can create serious difficulty.

What are the symptoms of an Achilles Tendon Injury?

There are various types of injuries that can affect the Achilles tendon. The two most common are Achilles tendinitis and ruptures of the tendon.

Achilles Tendinitis Symptoms

- Inflammation
- Dull to Severe Pain
- Increased blood flow to the tendon
- Thickening of the tendon

Rupture Symptoms
